Daily with the King

August 12 • Creating a Spiritual Legacy

I must remember that God is not only interested in my life, but also in my afterlife. I do not mean my life in heaven, but my life’s continuing influence on this earth. The status God wants me to attain is that of Abel, who being dead yet speaketh (Hebrews 11:4, KJV)

There are many ways to live after, but one of them is through my children and grandchildren. The Bible says it is possible for me to lay up an inheritance for my children and grandchildren (Psalm 103:17–18). That inheritance is spiritual, one that assures them the mercy and righteousness of the Lord for a long time to come.

The natural man also wants to provide for his children, but he usually does it through financial means. How many rich people leave mercy and righteousness to their descendants? And which is more important, dollars or mercy and righteousness?

But how do I leave such a spiritual inheritance? That is where I come in. God is willing to establish an estate for me if I fear Him, keep His covenant, and obey His commandments (Psalm 103:17–18). In short, if I live a God-fearing. God-honoring life now, the results of that life will accrue under God’s trusteeship for the benefit of my children and grandchildren. That does not mean they will be unconditionally converted, but it does mean they always will feel the influence of God’s mercy and righteousness.

What better provision can I make for my children? What better way, long after my sun has set, to continue speaking for God? That was the promise to Caleb: Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the Lord [your] God fully (Joshua 14:9).

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous (Proverbs 13:22).
