One of Satan’s subtlest temptations is to make me believe that God is holding out on me. That was his approach to Adam and Eve. I must understand that simply being a Christian does not end the attack. I am bombarded with all kinds of suggestions that there is “something more” to Christianity than what I have already received. Satan always whispers, “Christ is not enough; you need something additional.”
Yet the Bible clearly tells me, “Ye are complete in him” (Colossians 2:10, KJV). There is absolutely nothing, and no one, that God can give me in addition to Jesus Christ. Whatever I need is to be found in Him and Him alone If Christ is not enough, nothing is enough, and I am doomed to eternal restlessness in that case. But the trouble is not with the Godward side of things. The trouble is with me. If Christ is not enough, it is because I have shut the door of faith to what He can do in me. If Christ is not satisfying me, it is because there is a piece of grit somewhere in my spiritual machinery that is grinding things down to a halt. If I am in the “something more” condition of faith, I am on dangerous ground. I am open to any tempting suggestion by Satan. I begin to experiment with things, hoping to find the “something more” that is not in Jesus Christ.
Wanting “something more” is a telltale sign that the pipe is clogged. There is an abundance in Christ that we have scarcely dreamed of, much less experienced. If I do not experience Him in that fullness. I must make more room for Him, for God cannot give me any more of Christ than He has given; He can only ask for something more of me. “As you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith … overflowing with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:6-7, NIV).
“For of His fulness we have all received, and grace upon grace” (John 1:16).
