Daily with the King

  • December 31 • God’s Final Morning

I must remember that one of the unwritten laws of Scripture is that night  leads to morning. When I read the first page of the Bible I discover the “darkness” that was “upon the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:2, KJV), but the last page tells me of the God who will be my light forever (Revelation 22:5). There was darkness when Jesus was crucified, and He arose in the breaking light of the following Sunday morning (Luke 23:44; 24:1).

It was during the “fourth watch of the night” that Christ’s disciples were struggling hard to bring their boat to the Galilee shore. Suddenly, at the blackest point of the night, they saw Him walking toward them on the  water and they heard Him call, “It is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:25,  27). The wind immediately ceased, the waters grew calm, and the disciples worshiped their all-powerful Lord again. How often have Christ’s followers experienced this! Clement of Alexandria said, “Christ has turned all our sunsets into sunrises.”

If Jesus delays His return, there is one sunset we must all face. Yet, even then we look confidently through the darkness to the coming dawn and say, “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord” (Psalm 118:17, KJV). For that is the way God ends His beginnings.

To Thee our morning song of praise,  To Thee our evening prayer we raise;  Thy glory suppliant we adore  For ever and for evermore.

    Ambrose of Milan

“Thou makest the morning dawn and the evening sunset to shout for joy”  (Psalm 65:8, Berkeley).

And a voice came from the throne, saying, ‘Give praise to our God, all you  His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great舗” (Revelation  19:5).
