I must learn to have the “eyes of God” in all things, to see things as He sees them, and to appreciate them as He appreciates them. For example, God has a special way of looking at His Son. Jesus Christ. He sees Him as a “tender plant,” rich and beautiful, while the world sees Jesus only as a root [stump] out of a dry ground,” with no “comeliness” or “beauty” (Isaiah 53:2, KJV).
Do I see Jesus Christ as “altogether lovely” or as someone who is unattractive? We tend to look for our counterparts in everyone. That is why God looks at Jesus and finds great delight in Him; He sees Himself reflected in His Son. Natural people do not find Jesus attractive; in fact, they scarcely give Him a thought; but when we receive the Holy Spirit, suddenly Jesus Christ takes on a new attractiveness. We see Him in a new light; His hidden glories come bursting forth, all because it is the Spirit who is seeing Jesus through us.
From the other standpoint, God sees us human beings as stumps out of a dry ground, without natural beauty, until we receive His Son; then we become tender plants to Him because Jesus Christ makes us beautiful to God. So we Christians also delight in one another because the Spirit who is in each of us recognizes the Christ who is in the other person and rejoices in what He sees. The thrilling thing about being a Christian is that not only is Christ in us, but He by His Spirit is changing us more and more into His likeness every day (2 Corinthians 3:18). To the extent that we become more and more like the Christ who is in us, God rejoices over us; thus, little by little the beauty of Jesus becomes our beauty and God’s heart overflows.
I say it reverently, Jesus Christ is my natural beauty kit. No one else will make me as attractive and beautiful to God as He.
“He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place in everything” (Colossians 1:18).
