November 1 • The Savior of Our Bodies

My body is included in Christ’s redemption of me. “Body redemption” has two aspects: glorification, which will occur when Christ returns, and deliverance, which occurs now in this life. Too often I have been occupied with the future glorification of my body and have not given enough attention to its present need of deliverance.

The Holy Spirit is in charge of my body (Romans 8:11). He “quickens”  (gives life to) my body when it flags and sinks under the load of ill health, fatigue, satanic opposition, or old age. The Holy Spirit is under orders to keep my body functioning until my work on earth is done. He is also under orders to give whatever level of life my body needs to accomplish a particular command of God. Abraham and Sarah had “old” bodies, bodies that by nature had ceased to produce children;.yet God had promised them a son, Isaac. Their faith in God’s revealed word, plus the activating power of the Holy Spirit, rejuvenated their bodies to such an extent that Isaac was conceived and brought to birth (Hebrews 11:11–12).

Body deliverance is not automatic; it must be claimed by faith and appropriation. Whenever I feel myself physically overwhelmed, I must “wait for the Lord” (Isaiah 40:31). He then renews my strength and makes me soar like an eagle. However, I must realize that sometimes God refuses deliverance and allows my body to suffer in order to give me some new understanding or perception of His ways. In either case, I am to allow the Master of my body to have His way with me. Of this I am sure, He is as concerned about my body as He is about my spirit. Whenever necessary, the same Savior who was Himself strengthened in His severest agony (Luke  22:43) will not fail me in mine.

“Who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself” (Philippians 3:21).
