May 28 • Our Bodies as Channels

As a disciple I must rightly understand the use of my body in my service for Jesus Christ. First, I must consider my body to be a channel, not a receptacle. There are two great spheres in the world: the sphere of vast human need and the sphere of God’s infinite supply. The connection between the two is my body. So often we pray, “Lord, bless us,” or, “Lord, have compassion on us,” or, “Lord, revive us.” Such prayers indicate God’s reluctance. The Bible teaches us He is just the opposite; He longs to pour out His richest mercies upon us. The trouble is not with the source, but with the channel. How many bodies are available for His kindnesses?

Second, I need to realize that people are far less indifferent to God than I think they are. They deeply long for the reality that only God is able to give them. Too often they are turned away from God because He is misrepresented to them by His children. They see our preoccupation with our comforts and ease, our emphasis on material possessions, our ambition for place and prominence, and of course they become indifferent!

The meeting place for a seeking God and an indifferent world is through my body. If I yield my body to Him, He will use it as a message-sender to the unsaved. I will not need to pray for God to come in from the outside, so to speak, for He will be inside working through me. My pleas for power, compassion, and strength will be unnecessary; these will be mine already through Him who now possesses me.

My attitude toward my body should always be: I thank God for you, I will never pamper you, I will let Him who owns you possess you, and I will let others see Him in you. For my body is “a temple of the Holy Spirit” and I am not my own. So I will “glorify God in [my] body” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

Sacrifice and meal offering Thou hast not desired; my ears Thou hast opened; burnt offering and sin offering Thou hast not required” (Psalm 40:6).
