April 23 • The Ministry of Drastic Choices

As a human being I crave acceptance, but as a disciple of Jesus Christ I must expect to be misunderstood and at times rejected. When Jesus was growing up, He was “in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52). But after His baptism and filling with the Spirit, Jesus was no longer in favor with His neighbors, His kinfolk. When they heard Him preach they were filled with anger, threw Him out of the city, and wanted to throw Him off the cliff (Luke 4:28–29). Why such a sudden reversal?

The world does not like to be disturbed. It loves its traditions, habits, and folkways. Jesus, filled with the Spirit and on a mission, disturbed their peace. He was no longer the placid carpenter, the quiet but trusted neighbor. His Father had called Him to preach, to teach, to heal, and ultimately to die, and this new ministry called for drastic choices, clean commitments, and bold actions of faith.

Like his Master, the disciple cannot worry about being rejected, or even being understood. The life of self-sacrificing discipleship is so at variance with the world’s craving for comfort that never shall the twain meet. If I am too popular or too highly acclaimed, I had better check my message! “Give them what they want” is deplorable advice to a modern prophet. The messenger of God must be ready to fellowship with his Master, the angels, and a few faithful ones who have grasped what he is saying, and forget the masses. I love the “good shepherd” title that Jesus gave Himself (John 10:11), especially when I realize that it was said for the benefit of one who had been excommunicated from the synagogue for Christ’s sake (9:34). To all whom the world has rejected for His sake, Jesus Christ is the “door” to green pastures and abundant living.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8).
