March 16 • Holding Spiritual Wonder

I always go stale, Lord, whenever I lose my sense of spiritual wonder. Spiritual wonder comes from knowing that spiritual realities such as God and heaven are not far-off things, but things near at hand.

When the two disciples recognized Jesus after walking with Him on the Emmaus road (Luke 24:13–32), they were only seeing what had been there all the time. God gave them, momentarily, a glimpse into the spiritual world that existed continually around them.

How much of heaven do I miss, Lord, simply because my eyes are held down by discouragement, doubt, boredom, or stark unbelief? A desert, biologists say, may seem empty; but to the one who has eyes to see, it actually teems with life. So with the heavenlies. We need the prayer Elisha prayed for his servant, Lord … open his eyes that he may see (2 Kings 6:17). When he looked spiritually, the boy saw the resplendent forces of God on the surrounding hills.

Lord, I see the secret now. It is looking at things spiritually. To look logically, carnally, suspiciously, or naturally is to hold our eyes down and thus miss Jesus and a heart-moving experience.

Also, I must look expectantly. God’s great heroes have always lived in two worlds. They saw wonder and transmitted that wonder to others because they lived in sight of the heavenly scene.

Lord, I find myself caught in a vicious circle: I lose my wonder because my faith is too puny; then my faith grows weaker because there is not enough wonder on which to feed. At that point I must deliberately untie myself from every carnal bandage and ask the Holy Spirit to anoint my eyes again with spiritual sight. When that happened to the Emmaus disciples, they saw Jesus!

I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees Thee; therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:5–6).
