The other aspect of God’s testimony of us concerns our manner of life. Enoch is our example. Before his translation [into heaven] he had this testimony, that he pleased God (Hebrews 11:5, KJV). What kind of a life did Enoch live that made God testify on his behalf? Twice the Bible records the statement, Enoch walked with God (Genesis 5:22, 24). This walking with God by faith is a behavior that so pleases God that He testifies to it, makes public acknowledgment of it, and affirms it as a fact before men.
It is one thing to receive God’s testimony of my salvation, and it is an easy thing to obtain. But to receive God’s testimony of my life is only earned by walking in obedience to His Word. No one can walk carelessly, selfishly, or indulgently and expect God to say, I am pleased with you. God does not own a diploma mill. He does not hand out plaudits carelessly. Remember, God’s testimony is the affirmation of a fact.
God’s pleasure in us is a reflexive thing. When God is pleased with us, it is because He testifies to something in us to which He responds, something with which He agrees, something that arouses His interest. I think God is pleased when He sees His own image and likeness reflected in us. It is like a father who sees himself in his son, or a teacher who sees himself in his pupil. When I walk with God by faith I am really affirming that God is the greatest Being in the universe, and God is pleased because I have chosen the highest goal any human can choose—God Himself.
Is God pleased with me or does He still find in me the speckles of doubt and unbelief? How I long for the testimony, He pleased God! My great destiny is to be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29), and my great privilege is that here and now that process can begin.
That you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10).
